The Greater Houston Dental Society was honored to host the wrap-up meeting of the 2010-2011 International College of Dentistry’s Great Expectations Mentorship Program. The event was held at the Greater Houston Dental Society’s office on April 15, 2011 with Members of the GHDS Board, UTDB faculty, mentors and students attending the event.
This program is offered to 2nd year students who are matched with mentors from the ICD, UTDB faculty and upper classmen students.
The goal of the Great Expectations Mentorship program is to emphasize the importance of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethics in the field of dentistry during the 2nd year students’ early clinical experience. This is a framework within which they can identify and commit to patient centered values.
The program’s structure includes dividing the class of eighty-five, 2nd year students into five groups of seventeen or eighteen dental students. Each group of students has two private practice dentists who are members of the International College of Dentists, two faculty dentists and Jr. and a Sr. dental student to serve as role models. Group meetings take place in practicing dentist’s offices where participants discuss the best practices on maintaining this level of ethical and professional standards in dentistry.
