Interview with Fabia Younus, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Fabia Younus is a dual specialist in Periodontics and Orthodontics and owner of Greater Houston Dental Arts. She is a member of the GHDS/TDA/ADA. Here we share an interview with Dr. Younus for our January spotlight.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM, AND WHERE DID YOU ATTEND COLLEGE, DENTAL SCHOOL, AND RESIDENCY (IF ANY)?
I was born in Pakistan and received my early education there before moving to Toronto, Canada, where I completed high school. Growing up, I spent countless hours at my parents’ dental office in Pakistan, which inspired me to follow in their footsteps. I attended Fatima Jinnah Dental College (University of Karachi), training under some of the same professors who taught my parents. After graduating in 2009, I pursued an AEGD residency at the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, TX, graduating in 2011. I then completed a Periodontics residency and earned a Master’s degree at Saint Louis University in 2014, followed by an Orthodontics residency and Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York, NY, graduating in 2017. I became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 2015.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE?
For me, my practice is more than just a workplace; it’s a sanctuary—a safe haven where my team and I come together to foster meaningful relationships with each other, our patients, and colleagues. It’s a place built on trust, empathy, and compassion, where we deliver the highest quality care. It feels like an extension of my home, a family that I’ve nurtured with love and look forward to being there every day.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MISSION STATEMENT OF HOW YOU PRACTICE DENTISTRY?
Every mouth tells a story, and that story is deeply connected to the rest of the body. My goal is to treat each patient as I would want myself or my family to be treated. This philosophy is at the heart of my practice, and it’s why the orthodontic side of my work is so focused on being “airway-aware.” We aim to provide holistic care that goes beyond the teeth to address overall well-being.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE?
I like to say that I’m a full-time dentist and a part-time mom, though both roles are full-time commitments in their own ways. I’ve learned that life isn’t about balance but about priorities and seasons. There are times when my practice and patients require more of me, and other times when my family does. Both my family and my work team support me during these transitions, understanding that each season demands a different focus.
Delegation and planning have been my greatest allies. I prioritize what truly matters and delegate the rest, so when I’m home after a long day, I can give my undivided attention to the two most important people in my life: my husband and my son. It’s about quality over quantity, and I’m grateful for the understanding and encouragement from my family and team.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO CURRENT DENTAL STUDENTS?
Dentistry is one of the most rewarding professions out there. Approach your career with faith, gratitude, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Take the time to build relationships with your classmates and learn from each other—these connections will help you grow, not just as professionals but as a collective team.
Always remember the efforts of those who paved the way for you. Find ways to give back to the profession, whether big or small, and become an advocate for organized dentistry. There is strength in unity, and when we work together, we ensure that dentistry remains one of the greatest professions today and in the future.
