2017 Give Kids a Smile Day –
Way to Go, Team! The Greater Houston Dental Society, in partnership with UT School of Dentistry – Houston and several community organizations, provided dental treatment and education free of charge on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 at UTSD – Houston to benefit underserved children and teens from our local communities. Approximately 332 kids were seen (with a total of 373 screened) and we provided a value of $238,500 in dental services. Give Kids A Smile Day, a national campaign of the ADA celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month, focuses on the epidemic of untreated oral disease among disadvantaged youth. In preparation for the 2017 Give Kids A Smile event, UTSD – Houston worked with the Communities In Schools – Houston and Christus Foundation to prescreen and schedule treatment for students from local HISD schools. GHDS and UTSD – Houston worked to prescreen children and teens from both San Jose Clinic and Houston Asian American Dental Society which all occurred in January. In addition, an invitation to participate went out to a number of local organizations to notify their clients, all whom were asked to attend in the afternoon to be triaged onsite. Many thanks to the planning teams for their hard work and dedication in all preparations to ensure a smooth event: Dr. Michelle Aguilos-Thompson, Dr. Gary Badger & UTSD Pediatric Dentistry Dept., Dr. Bob Cederberg, Dr. Ingrid Duebbert, Dr. Sam Dorn & UTSD Endodontics Dept., Dr. Gary Frey & GP&DPH, Mr. Jonathan Green & UTSD Clinical Services Staff, Dr. Laji James, Ms. Mallory LaSalvia, Ms. Estelle Luckenbach & San Jose Clinic Staff, Dr. Margo Melchor, Dr. Mai-Tram Nguyen & the Houston Asian American Dental Society, Dr. Joseph Piazza, Mr. Jose Pinales & the UTSD Radiology Team, Mr. Adam Pinales, Ms. Hannah Rhodes, Dr. Victor Rodriguez, Mr. Nick Rodriguez, Dr. Kimberly Ruona, UTSD Technical Services, Ms. Jennifer Smith, Ms. Rana Shammas, Dr. Debra Stewart, Dr. Gary Williams, Ms. Rhonda Whitmeyer and UTSD Technical Services & Informatics.

Veterans Smile Day - The Greater Houston Dental Society has partnered with Welch Dental Group to host its second successful Veterans Smile Day "Serving Those Who Have Served: The primary purpose of this event is to provide emergent and primary dental care, free-of-charge, for those segments of the veteran population that have no other means of access to dental care. This is a community-led event attracting dental professionals, veterans affairs groups, and others who want to be a part of a rewarding project that makes a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of nation’s neglected veterans. On November 5, 2016 over 150 volunteers came out for the event and we were able to treat nearly 200 local veterans with dental services including x-rays, exams, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. Our sincere appreciation to the volunteers, supporters and sponsors of the event. Visit the GHDS Facebook page for a collection of photos and video from the November 5th event.
